Rainbow Lit: Please give the readers a brief bio on you as a person and as a writer?
Ben Harris Jr.: I’m an only child who grew up in a two parent household. All of my grandparents are from Louisiana so even though I’m from Los Angeles, I have a Southern background. At the age sixteen my father went to jail for murder and didn’t get out until he was twenty-six years old. Needless to say, life within my household was no trip to Disneyland. My mother is the best mother in the world. She did everything to make sure I had food in my mouth and roof over my head. My father did too. He loved me; he just had serious unresolved issues that stemmed from his own childhood as well as his long stint in prison. To make matters worse, he knew that my mother loved me more than anything in this world, including him; this caused him to become somewhat jealous of me. My father was very verbally abusive towards me until I became a teenager and started setting it off in the house. LOL. I was scared but I thought, maybe if I act a fool too, he will get tired of getting in my face its’ crazy because he would do all of these little evil things towards me but would kill someone else if they did something to me. Go figure.
I first took an interest in the art of writing at the tender age of ten, after winning first place in a city wide essay contest for writing to Los Angeles city Councilmen Rudy Svorinich. My essay was in reference to problems that plagued the community during the time. As a writer I write a little bit of everything but, A Lucrative Vengeance would be categorized under Urban Drama or LGBT. The reason it would be categorized under LGBT is because of the relationship that took place between Euphoric and Lorenzo in the book. That relationship was strongly based on a relationship that I was in at seventeen years old. I hope other young guys can read A Lucrative Vengeance and learn from that relationship.
Rainbow Lit: Tell us about your debut novel “A Lucrative Vengeance”?
Geez, where do I begin? I started writing, A Lucrative Vengeance when I was twenty five. Currently I am twenty nine and I’ll be thirty in July. I attended A Performing Arts High School in Las Vegas and when I graduated I moved back to Los Angeles and began acting and modeling. I booked commercials and print ads for companies such a Coca Cola, Verizon Old Navy and Pizza Hut to name a few. While on the set of a Sav-On’s commercial I met a young lady named Nicole. The Nadia character in my books is heavily inspired by Nicole. Nicole was an actress who stripped in Las Vegas from time to time on the weekends. A Lucrative Vengeance is a more sensationalized version of our friendship.
Rainbow Lit: This book is taken from the headlines, what event is it taken from?
A year after completing, A Lucrative Vengeance something mind-blowing happened- Michael Jackson died! The reason Michael Jackson’s death is significant is because Dr. Conrad Murray, the Physician who was treating Michael Jackson during the time of his death, was also Nicole’s boyfriend, if that’s what you want to call their relationship. She was upset that I released the book but the crazy thing is she knew I was writing a book and what it was about. She also knew that it was NOT a tell-all IT WAS COMPLETED ABOUT A YEAR BEFORE MICHAEL JACKSON EVEN DIED. Someone tipped the media off because people knew that she and I at one time were pretty close. She changed after meeting Conrad. I had written the manuscript and it was just sitting and collecting dust until I could figure out a way to get it published. It wasn’t like I was being an opportunist; I had always planned to release it, I just didn’t know how. The only reason Nicole is mad is because Michael Jackson died and investigators started to pull skeletons out of her closet, which the world saw unfold during the trial. She is a good person and I wish her the best. I know she will pull through, she is resilient like me.
The most important thing that I should mention about my book is that I can guarantee you that you have never read anything like it. You will be thinking about the characters long after you finish reading the last sentence. My words will linger with you and you will want more. The reason I know this is because when I write, I feel as if I go into a trance. Something takes over me and the words that I pen are not my own. I am simply the vehicle that infinite intelligence uses to communicate with the world.
Rainbow Lit: This book is a first in a series you have planned. What can we expect from ‘The Euphoric Series’ next and in the future?
This book is part of the Euphoric series and the sequel to A Lucrative Vengeance is called, A Juicy Kind of Life. It will be released in June 2013. I love character development and throughout the Euphoric series you will see Euphoric go through trials and grow as a person through each test of faith. He is quite the trooper!
Rainbow Lit: You are a reader for sure if you are reading the New York Times, New York Daily News, and Las Vegas Review Journal. Besides the papers that I just mention, where do you get your ideas and how many newspaper clippings do you have that will become a future novel?
Newspaper clippings such as the one link above are clippings about me. I’m not a True Crime author; I don’t write books based on things that I’ve read in the news, at least I haven’t up until this point in my life.
Rainbow Lit: Please give the readers a brief bio on yourself and you as a writer?
I like to write things that will leave an uplifting, lasting mark. With me, you might think you are getting a sexy urban tale but by the end of the book I have tricked you into learning something that I think you should know. My books are laced with uplifting messages. I mention people, places and things that will peak your interest and cause you to go searching things.
Rainbow Lit: Will you publish your book in paperback?
A Lucrative Vengeance will be released for paperback, hopefully by the end of 2013.
Rainbow Lit: Will you translate your book into other languages or audio book?
As an indie author, I will not be translating my work into languages other than English. This might all change if, no when, I get a publishing deal.
Rainbow Lit: What are you currently reading?
I’m an avid reader. I have read every single E. Lynn Harris book and Eric Jerome Dickey is my biggest inspiration. Sometimes when I read something he has written I feel as if I wrote it and he just beat me to publishing it. Currently I am re-reading, Ask and It is Given by Jerry and Esther Hicks. Their teachings have empowered me and changed my life in remarkable ways. It is because of their teachings that I know that I am the creator of my own reality and that there is nothing that I cannot BE DO or HAVE.
Rainbow Lit: What can we expect from you in the future?
Right now I am working on a lot of ghost writing projects as well as working on my third novel which is totally different from The Euphoric Series. I was born to write so in the future you can look for my name whether I am a published author or hustling independently. You can find more information at www.BenHarrisJr.com.
